Billy Muldoon- Review MAY2008

BILLY MULDOON

Billy Muldoon, residing in Enfield, Is a 16 year old self-taught singer songwriter. He’s influenced mainly by bands such as Green Day and Blink 182, but he told me “My influences and tastes have changed since then, but they’re still two of my favourite bands”.

I never knew about his musical talent until a friend posted me the link to his MySpace music page. To be honest I really couldn’t believe that he was the quiet one I’d met on a day out in Camden!
I was really impressed to come across an artist with so much depth to his music. It has a really nice cheery air to it, much like the styling’s of Jack Penate. When you listen to each of the songs you can hear the story in the lyrics. It almost plays out in your head.

Billy Muldoon is one of those artists that you automatically gain a likeability towards. I think that even a hardened professional would find it hard to dislike him. He has a natural vocal talent and the way he plays and the way he sings really brings his songs together. I think also, that because he doesn’t try to be like anybody else- that he just tries to be himself, is really going to get him somewhere. If he doesn’t get signed within a few years I’ll be surprised.
Billy said: “I don’t try to be different or try to stand out, I’m just doing my own thing you know, I’m just doing the only thing I’ve been able to do, so if people like my music then thanks, but if they don’t, I wont worry about it. I’ll just continue writing.”.

My favourite song of his, is “Call It A Night”. The song has a clear story to it and it does his voice and ability to play the guitar real justice. The song shows what he is really capable of.  His songs have what I would call, a charming simplicity to them. Billy Muldoon’s music, without putting it into words, shows people that you really can find beauty in the simplest of things. This is signified in the subtext of the songs, behind the lyrics and behind the chords.

Billy Muldoon really deserves all the good publicity he can get. He has so much to offer the British music scene. He has a natural flair for writing, singing and performing, and it really shows.
There’s nothing that could knock him, he’s headstrong and determined to make it. His ambition is what is going to shape him as an artist and is a good trait to have, especially at the moment with the ongoing competition between new artists due to the invention of “MySpace Generation”.

MySpace has famously been the starting point for artists such as Lilly Allen, Kate Nash and, of course, Jack Penate, himself, who said that he thought he would be “the last of the MySpace bunch”. There’s is still a strong chance for him though because I think that his music completely differentiates from that of any artist today. Definitely worth watching out for.
