Tom Williams- Review November 2008

Tom Williams. 

Well where do I start… 

Basically Tom Williams is a fifteen year old singer/songwriter, hailing from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Toms main influences are friends (especially best friend, Emily Coulton, of whom he wrote the song “My Emily“ about), family, his musical background and also bands of similar genre to City and Colour. He enjoys covering tracks from an acoustic album released by local band Lost Without Cause.

For a first-timer I’d say that Tom was certainly something special. Listening to his voice really deceives you into thinking that he is a lot older! The maturity of his voice and soft tone really define him as a musician. There’s a certain autobiographical charm in all of his songs, all of them reflect his own thoughts and feelings and are shown really nicely through the lyrics in his songs… it’s definite to say that Tom Williams displays exceptional vocal and musical ability, his ability as a songwriter is something that adds to his appeal. Tom’s sound is one that would appeal to young and old, so don’t be put off by the fact that he’s only fifteen! He’s serious about his music and it’s really good to see in somebody so young.

I don’t think that I could compare him to any other artist I know because, to be honest, I think it would be a little degrading- who wants to be compared to an artist when they’re trying to create their own sound?! But nevertheless this shouldn’t dampen anybody’s opinion on him! Its not everyday that you find such talent with so much confidence, seriousness and sheer enthusiasm for what he does! He’s come a long way in such a short time (I remember hearing him play at a school concert a few years back- his guitar was amazing but I could tell he was so nervous!), the hard part isn’t over yet but I know for sure he’ll get somewhere if he sticks to it!

Tom’s decision to record his songs when he could was a bloody good choice in my opinion and in a few years time he may well be looking back thinking the same thing. I wish him all the best and urge you all to have a listen to him! I have a feeling I will be reviewing him again very soon.
